The Buick Legacy

There are quite a few American car companies that have a history going back more than 100 years, but Buick is the oldest auto manufacturer still in business today. The brand got its start all the way back in 1899 as the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company. There were some disagreements on how to proceed between chief engineer Walter Marr and owner David Dunbar Buick, but after a few false starts and some change-ups, the Buick Motor Company got its start in 1903. Production moved from Detroit to Flint, MI, the following year, and the overhead valve engine was patented at around the same time. This engine design would become vital to Buick’s early vehicles and a major part of its success.

To give you a sense of how things started and how quickly they moved, Buick made 37 automobiles in 1904, followed by 750 in 1905, then 1,400 the following year, and more than 4,600 in 1907. It made 8,800 vehicles in 1908 and became the top manufacturer in the country, beating out Ford and other companies at the time. During these years, financial troubles caused Buick to look for new investors, and it found William C. Durant in 1904, who became a controlling investor and was a major force behind the push to increase production at that time.

In 1908, Durant founded General Motors with the idea of creating a single, large company that had a number of individual brands. Rather than have these brands compete, however, he wanted each to have its own place and create a larger lineup than one single company might be able to offer. In many ways, Buick was the foundation of GM, and Durant built upon it with additional acquisitions in the years following its founding, including Cadillac, Chevrolet, and more. Over the last century, numerous brands have come and gone, including some within GM, but Buick has stood the test of time and proven itself over and over again.

Today, Buick remains a vital part of GM and is slotted high up as a luxury brand just below the pinnacle Cadillac models.
